Karol Jozef Woytyla who was to become Pope John Paul II was born in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920. The beloved 265th Pope of the Catholic Church, Pope John’s death was a profound loss to the faithful. To be sure, he faced many controversial issues during his lifetime and his tenure as Pope, but he was well loved.

At the time of his death and the election of the new Pope Benedict XVI, I researched the charts of both Popes and the moment of election. The Cardinals’ decision was signified by a signal of white smoke that I was able to watch on television and time personally. This week Pope Benedict XVI affirmed the beatification of Pope John Paul II and reminded me of the work I had done in 2005.

Beatification What does beatification mean to the Catholics Church and believers everywhere? Beatification is one of the four steps of canonization that can lead eventually to sainthood in the Catholic Church. While the process has changed many times over the centuries, the current process begins with the death of an individual who has been martyred or is thought to have caused a miracle or favor through the candidate’s intercession. Also, the writings and teachings of such a candidate must have purity of doctrine. In the second stage a thorough investigation determines whether the candidate died for the faith or offered his life in sacrifice or in dedication to Christ and the church. All doubts must be addressed through a devil’s advocate process. The third stage is the beatification in which the candidate is declared to have been proved to be worthy due to martyrdom or a verified miracle. Once beatified, another miracle must be proved in order for the candidate to achieve sainthood.

Astrology I am very interested in symbolic degrees and there are several authors and systems. Usually I prefer Charubel but I find that system usually works bests with event-type charts rather than individuals. I explored several other systems for the Popes and obtained the best results from the Sabian symbols taken from The Astrology of Personality by Dane Rudhyar. Briefly the concept is that each whole degree is represented symbolically, and the selection of such symbol differs from technique to technique.

Because whole degrees are rare on a chart, the system instructs that all positions past zero minutes be rounded up the next higher degree. Please note that because of this rounding up process you will find listings for 30 degrees of each sign indicating that it is the last degree of a sign that has not transitioned to a new sign. In an excess of curiosity, I always note both degrees. Also, and not part of the usual “rules”, I also look at the degree prior if a body is retrograde. My reasoning? Life is a process with one moment leading to another, so I choose to look at the “flow” of the changing degrees. The “rule” says round up so that should be primary, but you can elaborate using adjacent degrees.

I investigate the ten bodies, the ascendant, midheaven, and north node. If I believe spiritual issues are involved, I may also add the karmic ascendant, Dark Moon Lilith, the vertex, the pre-natal eclipse, and possibly the Part of Fortune. You can use your own preferences. It does not hurt to generate too much information, and ignorance is never your friend, so I prefer to look first and eliminate later. At the time of the changing of the Popes, the symbolic degrees strongly illustrated the spirituality of Pope John II. As you read the degree symbology remember that most of it was formed at the turn of the 19th century and shortly after. Following is what I found relative to his chart. I have italicized what I see as spiritually pertinent.
